Black Backed Jackal Eye:
These cheeky little predators are never too far from lions. They tend to hang around a recent lion kill and sneak in to steal some scraps. They are very bold and won’t hesitate to sneak up on sleeping lions for a quick meal!
Spotted Hyena Eye:
I met this hyena in Zimbabwe while I was visiting my coworkers. We were driving around the Zambezi National Park when we saw two spotted hyenas sniffing around. They were juveniles and still fairly fluffy! This one was actually so curious that it came up to our car and looked right down my lens. The sunset reflected in its dark eye, which added beauty to the misunderstood predator.
Bat Eared Fox Eye:
My encounter with these cute little guys was very brief and a surprise! I was following two young lions through the bush in my rickety car, and parked near them while they took their nap by a bush. A safari vehicle saw me parked and knew I was with predators, since I was researching them. He came crashing through the bush for his clients and scared a little family of bat eared foxes away! They scattered and I quickly grabbed my camera to document the encounter – I definitely wasn’t happy about that safari guide who was very careless.
African Painted / Wild Dog Eye:
I met this individual while I was studying them in South Africa for my Master’s degree. I was studying their behavior, dynamics, and distribution on a private game reserve. One frigid morning, we waited forever for them to bless us with their presence. When they did come out from their den, they instantly came over to check us out in our car. The sun was just rising, and made their eyes glow like fire.
