My African Wild Dog Encounter in South Africa (Emergence):
I met this African wild/painted dog during my Master’s research in KZN, South Africa back in 2018. It was one very early and fridged morning as we waited for the pack to wake up. The pack saw us and carefully came over, using the bushes as cover. This painting portrays how the endangered species emerges from the darkness and into the soft light, a sign of hope for the conservation of the African painted dog.
The African wild dog is also known as the painted dog, African hunting dog, Cape hunting dog, spotted wolf, or spotted dog. Its symbolism is of family, community, and a positive attitude. African painted dogs teach us success through perseverance, to be a good judge of character, and to be free with our affection but guarded with more intense love. To those that painted dogs resonate with, tend to be friendly, social, compassionate, and determined. They are slow to offer trust but exceedingly protective and loyal to those they hold close.
